Web Processing Debuts Hot-Melt Backing Machine

Web Processing (M/C) Ltd., United Kingdom, has developed a carpet-backing machine that enables the manufacture of fully recyclable floor covering.

The Hot-Melt Carpet-Backing Machine applies a thermoplastic adhesive that replaces difficult-to-recycle latex, polyvinyl chloride and bitumen carpet-backing materials. The company reports carpet backed with the adhesive may be recycled at more than 90 percent of industrial and household recycling plants.

The machine combines coating and tuft-locking processes to fix fibers securely, cutting production time in half; and can handle up to 10 meters of carpet per minute. Its compact design and 20-meter production line for continuous running requires much less space than typical conventional machines; and it uses less than half of the energy required to run conventional machines, and produces minimal emissions and no atmospheric pollution.
