Zoltek's Pyron Fiber Selected For FR Applications

Leggett & Platt Inc., Carthage, Mo., has selected St. Louis-based Zoltek Companies Inc.'s Pyron® fiber for use in a new line of mattresses and bedding. The PYRO GON line is designed to be flame-resistant and to meet stricter flammability regulations due to go into effect in January 2004 in California. According to Zsolt Rumy, chairman, president and CEO, Zoltek, the new application could generate significant demand for Zoltek fibers in the future because approximately 20 million mattresses per year are sold in the United States.

The PYRO GON product features a blend of Pyron and polyester fibers. When subjected to an open flame, the polyester fibers pull back to expose the Pyron fiber, which acts as a shield against the exothermic oxidation of the combustible material in other parts of the mattress.

Rumy sees other potential applications for Pyron as a fire blocker and thermal insulator for safety clothing, welding blankets and other furniture items.
