Unifi Announces Repreve Investment, Establishes JV

Unifi Inc., Greensboro, N.C., is investing in backward integration of its Repreve ® recycled polyester yarn supply chain. The company will use new recycling technology to improve control over production of recycled chip used to make Repreve fibers, and recycle post-consumer and post-industrial fabric waste back into Repreve.

Unifi also has a stake in Repreve Renewables LLC, a joint venture (JV) that will sell Freedom Giant Miscanthus planting stock to farmers, who will sell their crops to U.S.- and E.U.-based bioenergy and biofuel operations. The non-invasive, high-yielding perennial grass -- developed by Brian Baldwin and Chase Kasper of Mississippi State University, and Georgia turf grass expert Phillip Jennings --  converts sunlight to biomass energy, tolerates extreme environmental conditions, requires only small amounts of pesticide and fertilizers, and costs less than other biofuel sources.
